When visiting churchyards, which I seem to do often, I usually find myself walking round and reading the stones. Stories unfold in my mind of who these people were, how they met.

With these miraculous devices we hold in our hands, and a subscription to one of the many genealogy databases, I found myself doing some instant genealogy on details from random stones.

This site is the result of needing somewhere to put that information as it was often so interesting. It also bears stories of people of whom I have learned by obtaining some piece of ephemera, such as a diary or letters.

Why do this? Most are from St Mary’s churchyard, Kennington, Ashford, close to where I live and where four members of my own family lie, so I live around the same streets and fields in which many of those in that churchyard lived their lives. Often an amazing story will jump out of the screen at me. Maybe it is inspiring just being in the presence of their final resting place. I don’t know really, but finding out about people is always interesting…

Please do leave me some of your stories or comments.
